Could the ZuneHD be the last Zune device, despite sales?

Zune Phone Concept Art by AdamEntity | Adam Stafford

Now that we have the ZuneHD selling out, will there be any more to fill the shelves and homes? Not exactly consider the future of Microsoft plans to introduce one more Zune device then exit the arena and return Windows Mobile focus. Microsoft is planning to aggressively get back into the mobile device market but not to market a ZunePhone as we often hoped for in the past.  After my recent email with an insider at Microsoft a few questions have been cleared up and confirmed.

The ZuneHD will not be the last device we see role out but potentially the second to last as they switch back to competing in the Smartphone market.  This is despite the growing Android, Palm WebOS, and Apple already consuming the market share of devices on the market and being developed. The Project Pink as it is so aptly named will be the first Smartphone to have a Zune like integration and it’s own Application Marketplace to compete with the Cupertino built Apps Store. To quote my source after being told by Microsoft management, “[Microsoft] is not going to do an Apple-like store for the Zune HD. Not now. Not ever. The few casual games and applets for the Zune are more along the lines of all there will ever be for the Zune. And the reason is [Microsoft] is not staying in the media player business for the long haul. They've said this but few seem to grasp it.”  This is due to the fact that Microsoft is developing an Apps Store for the Windows Mobile 7 device in late 2010 not in conjunction with the Zune, which makes perfect sense to not have parallel developments in place.

The source also went on to say “After that, Zune becomes a software/services play. That means Zune will be layered on top of and/or integrated into other [Microsoft] platforms (and maybe someday other third party platforms). The Pink phone is going to have Zune services available on/for it. At that point the Zune video service/catalog becomes common across phones, TVs, Xboxes and PCs. [The same] with the Zune music subscription service.” This could further explain the August exit of Zune Marketing Exec Chris Stephenson to Universal’s Interscope Geffen A&M Records which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Although, we can expect future apps such as the Facebook and Twitter apps currently in development we can be fortunate enough to see additional apps to be ported from the iPhone.  Microsoft has definitely outdone themselves with the latest device and will surely provide yet another great Windows Mobile OS however, some feel that the Seattle Washington based firm needs to focus more on developing devices and technology that no one else is developing.  Concerns loom over the timing in Microsoft’s development and release as we see the HTC Leo aka HD2, Samsung Instinct HD and Motorola Cliq get a head start on releasing HD Phone devices to the masses.  With the Zune occupying a small percentage of the Mobile Media device market we can only wait and see if this recent insurgence of consumers buying the ZuneHD will propel the device forward.  Only time will tell, we will have to take a wait and see standpoint as with the PlayStation 3 after it’s recent price drop and increased sales.

So if you have any ideas for a new technology or device for Microsoft to get started on developing please post a comment below.
